Amplimax Ultra FAQ

Does it work with my T-mobile WiFi calling?

Yes! With the right settings, which we walk you through, WiFi calling and cameras and more do work when using T-mobile services with the Amplimax Ultra.

What modem is inside?

The Elsys Amplimax Ultra is powered by the proven powerful and fast Qualcomm Snapdragon x62 chipset. With real world field tested speeds capable over 1 Gbps.

What bands does the Amplimax Ultra support?

Supported 4G bands:

2, 4, 5, 7, 12, 13, 14, 17, 25, 26, 29, 30, 38, 41, 42, 43, 46, 48, 66, 71

Supported 5G Bands

2, 5, 7, 12, 13, 14, 25, 26, 29, 30, 38, 41, 48, 66, 70, 71, 77, 78

What is the antenna gain of theAmplimax Ultras antennas?

How far from a cell tower can you be to still be able to use the Elsys Amplimax Ultra?

The short answer is, with clear line of sight, WELL over 10 miles is possible.

This is a difficult question to answer because cellular connections are not so simple as to say all towers operate the same, and cellular is not a single frequency aimed at your house.

Cell bands range from 600MHz to 6000MHz, not including mmWave signals. Every tower has a variety of bands that cover different frequencies, and may not have a full range of them available or functioning all the time.

The different frequencies travel different distances. 600MHz travels MUCH further and penetrates structures MUCH better than 6000MHz. It scales pretty much in a linear fashion. The higher the frequency, the shorter the distance it can travel at usable power levels.

Add to that, every cell tower around you may not have their cells/sectors antennas aimed at your house. That will make a huge difference in how much a signal will be to useful for you.

Elsys engineering has done field test at distances over 35km, with customer experiences reported at over 50km. ( 21.75 miles to 31 miles )

All in all, if you can get a signal at all, the outdoor antenna system of the Elsys Amplimax Ultra should be able to improve it for more usability.

Does it work with my T-mobile Home Internet? (or business Internet?)

Yes it does!

Does it work with my Verizon Home Internet? (or Business internet?)

Yes it does!

You will, though, need to ensure your particular unit provided by Verizon has a physical SIM card inside. The Elsys does not currently support the use of eSIM.

Without a physical SIM that is pre-activated, you will not be able to use Verizon service in the Amplimax Ultra.

Does the Amplimax Ultra support eSIM?

Not at this time.

Does the Amplimax Ultra work with "Other" types of data plans?

Yes, with the right settings it can be used with a variety of plans.

Does the Amplimax Ultra work outside of the United States?

Yes, using a "Generic" carrier profile setting and as long as your local data plan and carrier support the below cellular bands, the Amplimax Ultra can work where you are.

Note: There is no guarantee that the above is the case, but it should work as long as the cellular 4G and/or 5G bands are used on your towers. You will also need to know the proper APN setting as well as have an already activated data SIM card.

Supported 4G bands:

2, 4, 5, 7, 12, 13, 14, 17, 25, 26, 29, 30, 38, 41, 42, 43, 46, 48, 66, 71

Do I need special drivers to setup my Amplimax Ultra?

No. You will only need a device, like a computer, that has an Ethernet port (or a USB to Ethernet adapter). You must be able to connect to your Amplimax Ultra via its Ethernet port, there is no other way to setup.

Beyond the physical Ethernet connection, you only need a web browser, and it is recommended that you download the latest firmware update to your device so that you can update it via your web browser and the Amplimax Ultras web interface.

Can I use my own PoE power supply, like from my switch or router?

Yes. The Amplimax Ultra can be powered with a device other than it's supplied PoE injector, BUT your source must supply 24V PASSIVE PoE power input. It will not accept 48V PoE nor will it accept ACTIVE PoE power input.

What kind of warranty do you offer on the Amplimax Ultra?

Your Amplimax Ultra is supported with a 1 year manufacturers warranty, that we handle with our customers directly. No need to send it to Brazil to fix or replace, we handle it here!

How do I set it up? Do you have instructions in the box?

The Elsys Amplimax Ultra is an unlocked 4G/5G cellular modem. This is evolving technology. Better than an outdated fold up map of instructions, we have a very very thorough help page offering tons of information and videos to get your Amplimax Ultra up and running, and get you online with solid signal and better control over your connection!

Does the Amplimax Ultra have a bridge mode or IP Pasthrough?

Yes, the Amplimax Ultra is a 4G and 5G modem. It does offer the ability to pass the carrier assigned IP through to the connected device, effectively bridging the two ends of the connection as though the modem is not there.

Does bridge mode eliminate cellular "Double NAT"?

No, it eliminates TRIPLE NAT: Carrier NAT (CGNAT) + Amplimax Ultra internal NAT + Your routers own NAT. 3 different NATs for your traffic to traverse before it reaches the internet at large; or comes back.

NAT at it's simplest means routing or traffic direction function. I asked Google AI to define NAT for me in simple terms and this is what it output:

"Imagine your house has a big front door that everyone can see, and the street address in the door. That's like a public IP address. But inside your house, you have lots of little doors to different rooms. Those are like private IP addresses.

NAT is like a friendly doorman who stands at the big front door. When someone knocks on the big door, the doorman knows which little door inside the house to send them to. So, even though there's only one big door, lots of people can come and go through different little doors inside.

That's how NAT works on the internet. It helps lots of devices use just one public IP address to connect to the internet."

CGNAT is the one that confuses a LOT of people. Consider the carrier network to be a like a huge private network that does NOT generally assign you a publicly accessible IP address (it sometimes happens on some carriers, but this is not reliable unless you pay them for a public IP). Instead the carrier network will assign you one if it's privately owned IPs, just like your home router assigns your computer it's own IP address from your routers IP pool (think 192.168.1.x etc). This means that even though you have your home router, they are running your traffic through their router as well, before it hits the internet on THEIR public IPs. These public IPs are being used to route your traffic along with THOUSANDS of other customers; on the exact same IPs. This is why you may have seen a huge spike in those "prove your not a robot" challenges on website logins, after you moved to cellular internet.

So now you have your CGNAT, and you have your carrier supplied gateway modem/routers NAT. That's double NAT. If you added your own router to the mix, like a TP-Link, Ubiquity, Netgear, ASUS, etc, then you added a 3rd NAT,for Triple NAT. Replacing the carrier gateway with an Amplimax Ultra, doesn't eliminate a NAT, it takes the place of one.

If you put the Amplimax Ultra in "bridge mode" then you DO eliminate it's own NAT, but it doesn't magically also eliminate your home routers NAT or the carriers CGNAT, so you still have double NAT.

Can I use my own Ethernet cables?

Yes, just ensure the cable that goes outside is an outdoor rated Ethernet cable, and that you do not go over approximately 150 feet in total length, due to the PoE voltage of 24V.

can I send AT commands to the Amplimax Ultras modem?

Yes, there is a built in AT command page for this purpose

I use a special APN for my SIM card (Static IP, etc) can I setup a custom setting like that?

Yes, and we offer and exhaustive list of APNs for use with many carriers and plan types.

Can I set the MTU on the Amplimax Ultra?

No. You'll have to set that on your router or device.

I might want to check the IMEI of the Amplimax Ultra, and ensure it's correct for my SIM/account/plan. Can I do that?

The Amplimax Ultra allows access to AT commands that will allow the functionality you require.

This is not legal in some countries outside of the United States. If you are not in the US, please check with your local regulations on this topic.

Can I set/change the Amplimax Ultras TTL or HL?

Yes, to whatever number you need.

Does T-mobile offer a plan that works plug and play with the Amplimax Ultra?

Yes. They have to use their order code: ZUNLINT

It is called their "Bring Your Own Device" plan. Do not let them tell you it doesn't exist anymore, it does.

Do not let them tell you you have to have a specific IMEI, they don't need it and they can use any IMEI they want to register it.

If you get a rep that doesn't let you get it or does not know how to get it. Try another rep.

Also, you may want to have them add the SOCL: ZFLTROFFB

This will remove an inherent filter for business lines that blocks some streaming sites and content.

The Amplimax IP is 192.168.10.254, but I already use 192.168.10.x in my network, can it be changed?

Yes, you can change the IP and IP range of teh Amplimax Ultra as required.

Can I push a button and factory reset my Amplimax Ultra?

Yes! If you have forgotten the administrator login, or have any other reasons to use a physical means to factory reset the Amplimax Ultra, this can be done.

Is Elsys making an x75 version soon?

Elsys has made no announcements for any planned new version anytime soon.

I'm an advanced user and understand the risks, can I do more than just use the web interface?

Yes. The Amplimax Ultra does have a serial com port that you can access via it's USB-C port on the bottom of the unit.

Great product but...

Shipping=Great, instructions=outstanding, my signal= 99%, speed=meh. I saw all these videos of crazy impressive mbps but I old went from 150 to max was 250. As of this writing it's at 78mbps down. Upload is great. Lowest I saw was at 85. Using T-mobile. Don't know what is the issue. I followed the instructions to a T. I'm using an ASUS RT-AX58U router setup. Straight to a laptop my signal was its highest at 250ish and After doing a reset and getting a connection back, it varies but nothing ever higher than that. I was hoping at least to get 300-400. I live at the top of a hill with a clear line of site to the tower. Its better than my mimo waveform antenna but only on the upload speeds.

Surprisingly great device and even better service

I pulled the trigger on buying th Amplimax Ultra after our AT&T Fixed Wireless service quit working and I found out they are discontinuing that service and there is nothing else.available in our area. Using my cell phone, I had found out that on the West side of our house we had 5G Verizon service available even though Verizon says we can't get their 5G home Internet service. We used to get around 35-50Mbps download & 8-10Mbps upload speeds with the AT&T Fixed Wireless service. After setting up the Amplimax Ultra, we consistently get 300-400Mbps download and 40-50Mbps upload speeds at 67% 5G signal strength. That's the best I can get it for the signal strength but the speeds are great so I am not complaining. We'll see how it works over the winter & spring months for us and, if we have no issues, I will likely buy another for our camper that is on a seasonal campsite. Richard also has answered any/all questions that I had promptly. The product & customer service are both exceptional. Thanks again!

Very Happy with this unit

I purchased this unit after researching it online and watching many YouTube videos. I am impressed with how it works and all the options that it provides over my regular provider's modem. I am never going back, and I am very pleased with the unit and the DIY videos for installation.
